En vingt ans, le chorégraphe belge Thierry Smits a affirmé une démarche artistique à bien des titres hors normes, au caractère fréquemment polémique, souvent à contre-courant des tendances. Le présent texte vise à comprendre comment cette œuvre s'est construite dans le temps, quelles thématiques, formes et stratégies peuvent y être observées, et comment en résulte finalement un «champ de tensions» toujours vivant qui, peut-être, en constitue l'intérêt majeur. Sexe et mort, rébellion et insouciance, forme impure et composition, graphisme et corporalité, artifice et culture pop, sens et ineffable, c'est en effet dans ses oppositions, ses ruptures et ses contradictions que doit se saisir cette œuvre foisonnante. For over twenty years, the Belgian choreographer Thierry Smits has asserted an artistic approach that is well off the beaten path in many respects, one that is frequently controversial and often goes against the tide. The aim of this text is to understand how this work was built up over time, the themes, shapes, and stratégies than can be seen in it, and how the final outcome is an always living «field of tensions» which may be its major attraction. This work, which is bur,sting out in ail directions, is marked by its breaks and contradictions, its oppositions between sex and death, rebellion and carefreeness, impure form and composition, pure lines and physicality, artifice and pop culture, meaning and the ineffable. That is how it must be grasped. This temporal, stylistic, and theoretical analysis is written with empathy and distance by one who has been close to the choreographer in his artistic and personal journey, the dramaturge, critic, and writer Antoine Pickels, who présents here a rich visual account of that journey in an eminently photogenic work on the body and the stage as a counterpoint.
